Polyethylene plastic: available in low-density and high-density forms

Polyethylene plastic is an inexpensive plastic material that is chemically resistant and extremely durable. Polyethylene plastics are available in low-density and high-density forms. Low-density forms are discovered first, and high-density forms are discovered a few years later.

   Low-density polyethylene plastic (LDPE) was discovered in 1933 by two scientists, Reginald Gibson and Eric Fawcett. LDPE is made from petroleum. Compared with high-density polyethylene plastic, its strength is smaller and its elasticity is stronger.

  LDPE was discovered by accident in an experiment conducted by Gibson and Fawcett. Once discovered, they began to process the polymer material, which they named "polyethylene." Used to coat submarine cables, it played an important role in the war effort of the time, improving the performance of submarines. Over the next few years, other companies were licensed and were able to produce LDPE.

   By using LDPE to produce films or packaging materials such as garbage bags or sandwich bags. LDPE is used in the manufacture of dispensing bottles and various laboratory equipment. It is used to make general purpose containers, trays and food storage. Recycling is possible with this particular form of plastic, but it loses some quality in secondary recycling.

   Until 1951, two chemists, Paul Hogan and Robert Banks, discovered high-density polyethylene plastic (HDPE). Since LDPE is not very easy to use, they started experimenting. Through experiments with high-octane gasoline, they soon discovered crystalline polypropylene.

   From there they found a way to make crystalline polypropylene and HDPE. HDPE is made from petroleum and is stronger than LDPE. HDPE can be welded and is often found in larger plastic items due to its strength and durability. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) was first used to make hula hoops.

  HDPE can be found in folding tables and chairs, storage sheds and ski rails and boxes. By using HDPE to produce thicker plastic parts such as pipes, auto parts and storage containers. Certain HDPE containers can be used to store food and are considered dishwasher safe. HDPE can be recycled, but like LDPE, it loses its quality the second time around.

   Polyethylene plastic was discovered by chance many years ago through experiments. It can now be found in everything we use in our modern life. It is one of the most popular plastics in the world.
