Ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), also known as poly(ethylene-vinyl acetate) (PEVA), is a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate, typically 10-40% by weight of vinyl acetate, with the remainder being ethylene .

Broadly speaking, there are three different types of EVA copolymers that differ in their vinyl acetate (VA) content and how the material is used.

EVA copolymers based on low proportions of VA (about up to 4%) may be referred to as vinyl acetate modified polyethylene. It is a copolymer that can be processed as a thermoplastic - just like low density polyethylene. It has some of the properties of low density polyethylene but adds gloss (useful for films), softness and flexibility. This material is generally considered nontoxic.

EVA copolymers based on moderate proportions of VA (about 4 to 30%) are known as thermoplastic ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers and are thermoplastic elastomeric materials such as EPDM/EVA sheets. It is not vulcanized, but has some properties of rubber or plasticized PVC, especially at the higher end of the range. Both filled and unfilled EVA materials have good low temperature properties and are tough, materials with about 11% VA are used as hot melt adhesives.

EVA copolymers based on high proportions of VA (greater than 40%) are known as ethylene-vinyl acetate rubbers.
